To generate excitement and express our appreciation of the dynamic partnership with Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, Santa Monica Place is hosting a Ribbon Cutting & Grand Opening event for SAMO’s Clubhouse Children’s Play Area!
Event will include:
- Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
- Live Musical Entertainment by Music Stars and Masters
- UCLA Family Commons Mascot
- Giveaways (while supplies last)
- Arts and Crafts
- Light refreshments
- And of course, play time with SAMO the 42-foot long Humpback Whale!

ABOUT SAMO's CLUBHOUSE:
SAMO'S Clubhouse is a custom designed 1300 sf play and learn environment for children up to 8 years old. It will be located on Level 3 inside The Food Court.
Features include:
SAMO the Whale, a sculptural 46’ long “clubhouse” a stylized full size humpback whale Built from steel ribs, wood decking, rope netting, and “found objects”.
SAMO creates a play environment for children that is as unique as the mall itself. It incorporates multiple climbing elements, a balance beam, an inclined tight rope, a 4’ high slide, and lots of interactive areas including talk tubes, telescope, periscope, and other fun activities for kids to explore.
SAMO is surrounded by a colorful and playful “ocean” floor made of recycled rubber. A 25 foot long “coral reef” wall stimulates the visual and physical senses of toddlers while providing a nurturing place to explore unique textures, surfaces and moving elements.
